                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Mission to Green Valley, Chapter 7

     The chaos weasel with the fancy armor took a step back from Vengeance's powerful 
slash, simultaneously parrying Brewster's short sword.  "He moves like a snake," 
Vengeance rasped.  "Stay behind him Brew, keep him off balance."  He was breathing 
hard, the semi-toxic air making his throat feel raw.
     Sounds behind him caught his attention and he feinted at the weasel, then glanced 
over his shoulder.  Teetotaler, Moose, and Marduk were now fighting four of the 
creatures, not just one as he'd thought.  "Brew -- get down there and help the others.  
I'll finish this one."
      
     At least the four chaos weasels in the other group were in plain black armor, so 
they were not dressed like officers or mages, to the extent that the human fighters 
could interpret.  As Vengeance parried the sword of the weasel in front of him, he 
spared a quick glance for Tortured Trout, his own team's spellcaster.
     Trout was just behind him, feet spread and legs braced, hands moving slowly, head 
tilted, a quizzical expression on his face -- that was how he looked when he was 
experimenting with a new spell.  Orv, their non-human healer, who might also be 
considered a spellcaster, was nowhere to be seen.
     There was a sound from his opponent, a whisper of moving air.  Vengeance stepped 
to one side, his attention now fully on his own duel.  The giant weasel's blade 
whipped past his head.  An acrid whiff in the blade's wake told him that the weapon 
was poisoned -- deliberately so, or perhaps just due to the alien nature of his 
opponent's world.  Vengeance lunged forward, the point of his sword speeding toward 
the chaos weasel's chest.
     Then the world seemed to shift gears.  Time slowed.  Vengeance's mouth opened in 
dismay as his blade snapped against the black armor.  "Nnnoooo..."  And his opponent 
swung mightily across the human fighter's neck.  Vengeance gaped, breathless, his view 
of the world tumbling as his head came free of his neck...
     "Undo!" came Trout's voice, distantly.
     Vengeance lunged forward -- but wait, that wasn't going to work out well.  He 
threw himself to the side, his feet slipping on the brown, muddy grass.  He fell on 
his side, and the weasel pivoted to bring the sword down through his side.  
Unbelievable pain...
     "Undo!"
     He fell on his side and rolled quickly away from his foe.  A blade plunged 
through his spine...
     "Undo!"
     He fell on his side and rolled quickly into the chaos weasel's legs, thrusting 
his jagged, broken blade up into the creature's groin, and twisting it while surging 
up underneath the armored weasel.  Its blade pierced his thigh, but he managed to 
stand, shouldering the monster away and attacking again.  His jagged blade gouged into 
its face.  The creature hissed something that sounded like words, and died.

    Meanwhile, down the hill, Marduk beheaded a chaos weasel, then had to do it again 
and again as time kept resetting.  Moose chopped off a creature's mace-wielding arm, 
then fumbled the attack, then chopped off its whole shoulder and pivoted to attack 
Teddy Brewster's opponent.  Teetotaler fell beneath the charge of his own opponent, 
died, and came back to drive his backup dagger into its belly.  Teddy Brewster danced 
-- or slipped nimbly -- away from his foe but was impaled, then danced away with an 
added whirl and threw mud in his opponent's face, then he and Marduk attacked it from 
opposite sides, ending its life.
     Orv popped out of the ground, stepping from one dead chaos weasel to the next, 
touching their bodies, which sank into the mud and vanished from sight.

     Vengeance used the support of a small dying tree to drag himself to his feet.  He 
could feel the poison from the enemy weapon burning through his veins.  He looked at 
Tortured Trout, at a loss for what to say.  Finally he whispered, "Wow.  That was 
horrible."
     The mage nodded.  "I haven't tried that spell before."  He pointed.  "Hey look."
     Orv had sat down on the ground and placed its childlike hands on the yellow mud.  
Around the spirit, dead grass greened.  A nearby sapling shed all of its leaves and 
sprouted new buds.  A sprout struggled up from the mud, grew leaves, became a bush, 
and bloomed with little white flowers.  The air, which had been noxious with a rotten-
egg stench, now seemed slightly less bothersome.  All the fighters started binding up 
each other's wounds.  Orv plucked some flowers from the bush, stuffed them into a 
water flask, corked it and shook it vigorously, then handed it to Vengeance.  "Please 
drink all of that.  Then I'll make more for whoever else is hurt."
     The weary warrior took a sip.  The liquid was sweet, a little bit fragrant.  He 
tipped up the flask and chugged it.  A strange sensation tingled through him.  Then 
the burning sensation was gone.  His leg started to feel better.  With a sigh, he 
looked at the little spirit.  "Orv.  Thank you."
     Orv nodded.  "You have all done the earth a service.  Thank YOU."
     When all the warriors -- even those who were not visibly injured -- had drunk the 
potion and were feeling much better, when the greening and enlivening of the grass and 
trees had spread, Orv said, "I still need to close the gate.  It will not be dangerous 
now, but it will take some time.  You should all go back to the hotel, and send for 
your ship.  I can find my own way back to the mainland when I need to."
     As they walked back to the road, Teetotaler said, "I feel kinda bad, leaving the 
little guy here."
     "He... it... isn't helpless, and still needs to keep its promise to heal the 
farmers around here," Tortured Trout said.
     Marduk snorted.  "It just need us to do the grunt work.  And we did good."
     "Thanks to your spell, Trout," Vengeance added.  "I guess we were lucky the bad 
guys didn't get any second chances."
     "Oh, it did," said Trout.  "You won't remember those things, though.  I just kept 
the spell going until you all got it right."

from 29th down to 109th!  Are you guy giving lessons or what?  Who can explain it?

up the ranks from 209th to 135th.  What's with NIKT?  He actually beat THIS MODERN 
WORLD 78's MEME FILLING, and walked away with 21 more points from the fight.  Major 
screwup at OTIS LIKES LUNGERS.  CORRECT STYLE lost 16 points to ABUKASA.  Some new 
strategies, perhaps?  Maybe CORRECT STYLE will provide more easy wins...  ME EITHER 
was reminded on the sands why KILLER QUEEN is Duelmaster.  Advice to fighters with a 
1 will--give up fighting!   
     No matter the time or place, men will always duel.  The most avoided team was 
HOWLIN BIRDHOUSE.  The bums at ASSASSINS couldn't face the challenges from HOWLIN 
BIRDHOUSE!  No excuse for that!  How well I know the feeling of being the most 
challenged warrior, NECROMANCY 101!  Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to 
haunt you.  Maybe THIS MODERN WORLD 10's CULTURE WARRIOR is one of those guys who 
likes pain, or something.  That's what he'll get next week, after challenging up 27 
to ARVA OF TULA.  I don't get it.  CULTURE WARRIOR goes and challenges ARVA OF TULA, 
way above him, but gets 1 points after he loses!  Is this a new strategy?   
     A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing.  Some fighters 
don't accept this.  The best do.  Who will dare fight NIEMAND, after he returned from 
the Dark Arena?  (For the record 1-0-1 is 33, and has he points) Yeah, yeah, 
FAKEMORPH killed DOGELORD, who was "too young to die."  Well, he was a fighter, and 
that's what you have to face.  How long have I been here?  I got people to see, 
places to go...   
     Well, I'm pretty much through.  You guys need to get back practicing.  The end 
of another Spyreport!  That's cause for celebration in my book!  I don't want to
